Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for your first look at Ship Time.

Preparing to launch · These answers describe the planned experience. Release details will be announced here.

Getting started

What is Chrono Vigil™?

Chrono Vigil is the maritime timekeeping experience being developed for Ship Time. It brings the clock, watch routines, duties, weather, and daily records into one companion.

Do I need to work aboard a ship to use it?

No. Ship Time is being developed for people who value maritime timekeeping: working mariners, cadets, recreational sailors, and those who carry a lifelong connection to the sea. Experience is welcome; curiosity is enough to begin.

What devices will it support?

Ship Time is being developed for iPhone and Apple Watch. Supported devices and operating-system requirements will be announced with the release.

When will Ship Time be available?

Ship Time is preparing to launch. Release information and availability will be announced on this website.

Time and watchkeeping

What are eight bells?

Eight bells mark the end of a traditional four-hour watch. The count advances every half-hour, from one bell through eight, then begins again.

What is Ship Time?

Ship Time is the time maintained aboard your vessel. You set it manually to match your shipboard routine.

How is Ship Time different from UTC?

UTC provides a worldwide time reference. Ship Time follows your vessel’s chosen offset from UTC. The independent 24-hour GMT hand gives you a reference alongside the main clock.

What happens when I start a watch?

Starting a watch records an actual watch session. You can follow its elapsed time and end it when your watch is complete. Your configured watch schedule and your actual recorded session are separate.

Duties and reminders

Can I schedule recurring duties?

You can schedule a saved duty for a due date and time, with optional repetition and reminders. Each scheduled occurrence is separate from the saved duty’s instructions.

Does dismissing a reminder complete my duty?

No. Dismissing a reminder does not mark the activity complete. Completion and cancellation are separate actions.

Why didn’t I receive a reminder?

Check that notifications are allowed for Ship Time. Focus modes, sound settings, and other device settings may silence or delay alerts.

Weather and location

What is the difference between Weather and a Weather Log?

Weather shows available conditions and forecasts. A Weather Log preserves an observation or report as part of your daily record.

How current is the weather information?

Freshness depends on the source and measurement. Check the source and timestamp shown with the information; different readings may have different ages.

Are tides and currents the same thing?

No. Tides describe changes in water level. Currents describe water movement. Observations and predictions should also be read as distinct types of information.

Why is my position unavailable?

Location access may be disabled, denied, or temporarily unavailable. Check the app’s location permission and your device’s ability to obtain a position.

Appearance and help

What is Dark Bridge?

Dark Bridge is a dedicated low-light appearance with subdued colors and adjustable intensity. It is separate from ordinary Dark mode.

How do I report a problem or suggest an improvement?

Use Inquiries in the website footer. For a problem, include your device, operating-system version, and what happened. Never send passwords.

Still have a question?

Send a message through Inquiries. Our Crew would like to hear from you.
